{"id":11296,"date":"2026-07-23T10:01:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T10:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/srms.ac.in\/ims\/?p=11296"},"modified":"2026-07-23T10:01:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T10:01:41","slug":"a-first-of-its-kind-liver-failure-recovery-using-plasma-exchange-therapy-at-srms-institute-of-medical-sciences-creates-medical-history-in-bareilly-kumaon-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/srms.ac.in\/ims\/a-first-of-its-kind-liver-failure-recovery-using-plasma-exchange-therapy-at-srms-institute-of-medical-sciences-creates-medical-history-in-bareilly-kumaon-region\/","title":{"rendered":"A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND LIVER FAILURE RECOVERY USING PLASMA EXCHANGE THERAPY at SRMS INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES CREATES MEDICAL HISTORY IN BAREILLY &#038; KUMAON REGION!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Such advanced interventions are currently available at only a few specialized centres across India, making this a landmark achievement not just for SRMS IMS, but for healthcare across the entire Rohilkhand Region\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a landmark breakthrough for healthcare in <strong>Bareilly &amp; Kumaon region<\/strong>, <strong>SRMS Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Bareilly, <\/strong>successfully saved a critically ill 25-year-old female suffering from <strong>Acute Liver Failure<\/strong> <strong>without a Liver Transplant,<\/strong> through the advanced <strong>PLEX (Plasma Exchange) Therapy <\/strong>procedure.<\/p>\n<p>The patient arrived at SRMS IMS as a referred case after multiple hospital visits in a life-threatening condition with severe jaundice &amp; unconsciousness for nearly three days, and was immediately admitted in ICU on a ventilator support. Conventionally, such cases leave only one option: urgent liver transplantation.<\/p>\n<p>Under the supervision of <strong>Dr Shivam Gupta (Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology, SRMS IMS)<\/strong>, the team explored both conservative medical treatment and liver transplant. However, medicines failed to show adequate response, while liver transplant posed major challenges due to its \u20b930 lakh cost, immediate donor requirement, and critical time constraints.<\/p>\n<p>At this crucial stage, Dr Shivam adopted the rare and highly specialized PLEX therapy in coordination with <strong>Dr Milan Jaiswal <\/strong>(Prof &amp; HOD) &amp; <strong>Dr Ujjwal Ahuja <\/strong>(Assistant Professor),<strong> Department of Transfusion Medicine, SRMS IMS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The patient underwent three consecutive PLEX sessions for 3 days. Soon after, she regained consciousness and was successfully removed from ventilator support the very next day. Today, she is stable, conscious, eating, walking, talking, and shifted to the ward.
