The department is dedicated to high standard of patient care medical research and training of UG and PG residents.
The department provides round the clock emergency services and OPD services conducting minor procedures, emergency surgery and major surgeries including the management of trauma. With an OPD of more than 35,000 a year and a fully functional burn unit, high dependency unit (HDU) and surgical ICU, the department running a MIS unit and has become the leading service provider in the field of advanced laparoscopic surgery. The department takes pride in possessing several advanced surgical equipment such as harmonic scalpel, DGHAL for hemorrhoids , minimal invasive surgery (laparoscopic) setup and Holmium/ Thulium laser for urological surgery. For the benefit of students an ENDO lab for learning basic skills and laparoscopic surgery including tissue handling in endo suturing has been commissioned in the department. Frequent guest lectures and workshops provides students with the recent advances in the field of surgery besides providing quality specialties super specialty services.
The department of surgery gives special precedence to training of undergraduate and postgraduate students posted. It has an annual intake of PG students and NMC recognised PG seats and the results average at 100% per year. Students take keen interest in learning clinical training as well as research work. PG students take active participation in poster presentation oral presentation and publications apart from thesis work. The department has done 20 publications in the last academic year. Surgery is a skill based branch and faculties take keen interest in organising conferences, CMEs, surgical workshops and guest lectures for updating skills and knowledge. Many postgraduate students after being trained at our department are now pursuing super specialization courses. Starting with basic laparoscopy 20 years ago the department has grown in leaps bounds in minimally invasive surgery and now offers a gamut of advanced laparoscopic surgeries. Department of surgery takes immense pride as an establishment referral center for advanced laparoscopic procedure in the region.
Established in September 2024 the department now has a fully functional Robotic Surgery Center, the first of its kind in the Kumaon & Rohilkhand region. The department is performing surgeries by robotic arm in gall bladder, hernia repair, prostate, pediatric colorectal, and oncosurgery. Now this year, we gave performed more than 50 Robotic surgeries successfully.

M.S. General Surgery has 4 recognized seats per year. The residents get the best of surgical exposure, research work with regular seminars and teaching classes in coordination with other departments like Radiotherapy and Oncology.
