The department of Ophthalmology at SRMS is the leader in the region for the largest number and most advanced technology of cataract surgeries performed as well as implantation of premium intraocular lenses tailored to meet every individual patients visual needs. Cataract surgeries by Phacoemulsification are done under topical anesthesia, popularly known as "No Needle Cataract Surgery" where the patient goes home within 2 hours of the operation and visual rehabilitation is fastest. High volume free of cost cataract surgeries are done under the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) scheme. Implantation of Extended Depth of Focus, Trifocal, Multifocal, Toric and other IOLs offering the patients youthful and spectacle- free vision is a well-known highlight of the department. Refractive surgical procedures including Implantable Contact Lenses are also done to provide spectacle independent emmetropia.
Among various sophisticated equipment used in the department the IOL master offers the most accurate calculation of IOL power. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an advanced diagnostic imaging technology used in the department for diagnosis and follow up of retainer optic nerve and other segment eye diseases. OCTA(OCT-Angiography) is a dye-free angiography of the retina which also gives results within minutes with high sensitivity for diagnosis of retinal and especially macular disorders. The Digital Fundus Camera allows retinal photography and angiography to be done in various indications notably diabetes related retinopathy that needs to be detected for the treatment before permanent blindness occurs. The Humphrey Field Analyser (HVF) offers static perimetry analysis for glaucoma and neurological disorders Nd:YAG laser and Green YAG laser for posterior capsular opacification diabetic retinopathy and other diseases are most advanced in the field. Vitreo-retinal surgeries and lasers along with surgery for glaucoma, trauma, oculoplastic procedures for ptosis, squint, etc. and other surgeries are routinely done in the department. Spectacle and contact dispensing are done with the help of auto refractometer and subjective refraction. High quality slit lamps with viewing units (for teaching purpose) along with Schiotz, Non-Contact and Applanation Tonometry and Direct and Indirect Ophthalmoscopes are other OPD facilities available. A highly advanced and dedicated operation theatre complex with 2 theatres having laminar flow, water treated with reverse osmosis for scrubbing, high end microscopes, PHACO machines, vitrectomy machines, wet lab etc. are other highlights of the department. The department also runs the only Eye Bank in the region equipped with Specular Microscope functioning 24x7x365. It also regularly conducts awareness program for both general public, staff and students of the institute to enhance the number of corneal donations. Various glaucoma awareness programs are also held. The department has a 30 bedded ward (24 general and 6 HDU beds) along with its own seminar room, museum and library. The department takes pride in catering to a high-volume patients inflow and surgical load with outcomes.
The department also runs the only eye bank in this region equipped with a specular microscope and serves the needs of the corneally blind in the society functioning 24X7.
Laser surgeries for the secondary Cataract, glaucoma and retina and services to pediatric eye diseases, trauma management, squint & oculoplasty, orbital disorder vitro retinal surgeries, contact lenses, optical dispensing are routinely performed.
The department is hosting a conference in the Institute on 28th & 29th of May 2016 “DRISHTICON 2016” under the aegis of the UP State Ophthalmological Society. This Conference is an amalgamation of speakers of international repute, line imageries and showcased research work.
